The Hunting Party was high on my list of anticipated books for 2019. I wanted a book that would be eerie, put me on edge, keep me guessing, and chill me to the bone. I am so happy to say that The Hunting Party delivered!
What a lovely idea it would be to have an annual getaway with your friends from university. Well, that’s what I initially thought. It would be nice to believe that you could just pick up where you left off after convocation, but situations change, and so do people.
This book had my full attention from the very first page, and it didn’t let me go until the final page. From the atmospheric setting of the lush, secluded estate in the Scottish Highlands to the intriguing group of old friends and the caretakers of the estate, this book was just brimming with a sense of foreboding. I was easily swept up in this dark tale of friendship which harbored many secrets, hard feelings, jealousy, obsession, lust, and deeply rooted resentment.
The story is told in alternating chapters between several of the characters. I loved getting a glimpse into their minds. It not only provided a snapshot into their history and the relationships that they had with each other, but it also offered their current unabashed opinions of their dear old friends and lovers. They weren’t the nicest, most likable characters, but they certainly were entertaining. I loved hating them!
With a blizzard ravaging the area, the remoteness and seclusion of the estate becomes even more evident. The tensions seem to grow even more between the friends. But when one of them turns up dead, it can only mean that one of their own may be responsible. With friends like these, who needs enemies?
This novel was scandalous, addictive, and made me suspicious of every single one of the characters. That’s what I enjoy about reading a mystery novel. I want my suspicions on high alert, and trust me, there wasn’t a single page or chapter that went by where I didn’t feel a sense of dread and unease.
I am definitely looking forward to reading more books by Lucy Foley in the near future.
