Older
 By Jennifer Hartmann

It had been a while since I had picked up a forbidden romance, so after reading the synopsis for Older, I realized that it was high time that I indulged in one again.

Everything about this novel should have been exactly what I was looking for. The writing was good, the story itself captivated me at the beginning, but I think it must have been a “me” issue, because for whatever reason, it didn’t keep me as glued to the pages as I had hoped. I hate it when that happens.

Halley was a good character. I felt for her. She hadn’t had a lot of love in her life. She hadn’t been treated with all of the nurturing, support, kindness, and love that every child deserves. When she meets Reed at a party, they both seem to be interested in each other. I will admit, their introduction was a bit peculiar (with her sitting in the water), but my interest was piqued as to how they were going to become more acquainted. I thought that the main characters had chemistry, but there was just something that was missing for me.

With most forbidden romances, you know that the couple is going to be found out. There is always that anxiety that their affair is going to be exposed, and it is going to have a negative effect on their friends, family or coworkers. That is part of the fun of these romances, though. I enjoy the apprehension, the fraught nerves, the butterflies that comes with them. I’m not sure what happened, but I didn’t experience those same feelings with these characters. I should have. Halley was having an affair with her best friend’s father who was twice her age. It was scandalous, but I was left feeling a bit indifferent and disinterested in it. Again, I hate it when that happens.

Older was my first book by Jennifer Hartmann and while this particular novel may not have hit the mark for me, I would certainly not hesitate to pick up another one of her books.
