A Dirty Job
By Christopher Moore
I think I would have to say that Christopher Moore’s great talent as an author is going too far over the top and still making it work. You might ask if that is really a thing, and I am here to tell you yes, yes, it is.
I’ll give you an example, without naming names: you’ve got a woman in an on again off again relationship with a vampire (I’m on board so far); now toss in a werewolf love interest to mix things up a bit (vampires and werewolves go together like peas and carrots); then we go and toss in a new love interest, a weretiger, oh and her brother becomes a werepanther, then we meet her grandfather, the fairy king, and don’t forget that her boss the whole time was a shifter who liked to shift into a friendly-looking dog. This is just too much going on, I lose interest by how ridiculous it all becomes; but Moore is ridiculous from the start, I am certain he could have pulled it all together.
Now, A Dirty Job is something completely different. Charlie Asher is over the top in an understated kind of way, but his supporting cast is over the top in an over-the-top kind of way. I loved them all from his child-friendly pets to his stereotypical immigrant neighbors and his mentor. Each character adds so many layers to this story.
A Dirty Job is a story that I wanted to keep coming back to and I was sad too see all of these great characters leave my life. It was the type of story that I felt the need to share, my wife and I now have an inside joke from this story. I highly recommend A Dirty Job, like bear.
