Happy Place put me exactly where I wanted to be, in my happy place, curled up with a wonderful book.
Who wouldn’t want to get away with their closest group of friends for a week-long summer vacation? For these six friends, this has become an annual retreat, and one that they each hold close to their hearts. This year’s trip is bittersweet, though, because change is on the horizon. The house where they have made so many memories has been sold, and Harriet and Wyn have been keeping a secret from the rest of their friends – they broke up five months ago. Since this year’s getaway is already going to be emotional, Harriet and Wyn decide to try to keep their secret until the last possible minute of their trip.
This novel is not just a summer read (although, of course, it would be a great one). This story has depth to it. Yes, it has that undeniable camaraderie and hijinks between friends who truly know each other, but it is so much more than that. I enjoyed getting to know this close-knit group of friends. They were more like a chosen family than mere friends. Going to their “happy place” for a final time ended up being more than any of them could have predicted.
I’m not going to lie, Harriet and Wyn’s relationship kind of broke my heart. Emily Henry let us see how they met, how their relationship grew, and how they fell in love. I loved them together, but I’m not naïve, sometimes things just don’t work out, people can change, relationships falter. What happened to their eight-year love story? How could it have all ended with a four-minute phone call? I couldn’t wait to find out.
I’m not sure that I could have enjoyed this story any more than I did. I loved these characters, their stories, their relationships with each other, and I loved all of the deep love that they had. This story was a mixture of joyful and hurting, but I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I felt both the pangs and the butterflies of this love story right in the pit of my stomach. Filled with depth, growth, chemistry, humor, a fabulous setting, and an intense romance, Happy Place was my happy place.
