This one comes with an intriguing premise, it is based on the proverb that bad things always happen in threes. The synopsis gives a great tease of what to expect without giving too much away. I’m in.
Ripley’s concept for The Rule of Three was great, playing off of a familiar concept, something that most readers will relate to. Execution-wise, it just didn’t work for me. I didn’t feel a connection to the characters. The story had some unexpected twists and turns that broke the connections that were developing. I understand what Ripley was trying to do, but it just didn’t give me the necessary time to get fully into the story.
I felt as though Ripley went all in on the use of three. It got to be too much of the same thing while trying to force it to be different. Connections were put in place, and it left the reader asking questions without really giving any closure. Unfortunately, The Rule of Three really didn’t hit all of the right spots.
