The Ground Rules Rewritten
(The Rule Breakers #2)
By Roya Carmen
Just when everything seemed to be getting back to normal for Gabe and Mirella, Weston reaches out to her, and temptation is once again thrust back into their lives.
Don’t get involved with them again.
Don’t jeopardize your marriage and your family.
You had a taste of it before; it didn’t work out.
Emotions and feelings are always involved.
Move on.
Again, these were all of the thoughts that were in my mind as I began reading this book. But just like a horror movie, the characters never listen to the advice that is being yelled at the screen: Don’t go into that dark basement. Don’t stop to help that hitchhiker. Don’t go into the woods by yourself at night. Look behind you! But seriously, where would the fun be in that?!
I couldn’t wait to read this book, and it certainly did not disappoint. From the first page until the final page, I was completely consumed by the story. Sure, it made me uncomfortable, it made me shake my head, cringe, and made my heart ache, but I could not pull myself away from it. Roya Carmen is an incredible storyteller. She has taken a normal, thirty-something couple with a good marriage and turned their world upside down, pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable in a relationship.
In an arrangement where sexual pleasure is the focus, feelings of jealousy and love are ever present. The modified rules of the arrangement become bent and broken, which in turn, intensifies the intimacy between Mirella and Weston. Love is not supposed to play a part in their arrangement, but it is becoming more and more difficult for them to keep their feelings at bay. Gah! My emotions were all over the place while reading this book. That’s what makes it so irresistible, it takes what we believe to be right and conventional and then almost makes us believe that these couples could possibly make this work. Of course, I quickly resort back to my original belief that this can never work out.
In The Ground Rules Rewritten, we learn a bit more about the characters and their marriages. We get to understand, or at least know how Bridget and Weston initially opened their marriage up to other partners. Weston opens up and reveals more about himself to Mirella. His reserved, quiet, controlled façade comes down little by little when he is around her, showing his vulnerability.
I won’t get into any of the specific details of the story, even though I would love to give a play by play and dissect all of my favorite parts. If you’ve read and enjoyed The Ground Rules, then you will undoubtedly love this book. Complete with all of the angst, tension, lust and passion of the first book, The Ground Rules Rewritten is a fast paced, delectable morsel of writing that has just upped the ante with that jaw dropping ending!
I love this series!
