Stop! is a book that everyone could relate to in one aspect or another. Whether you’re a teenager or an adult, we all have insecurities that we try to mask in our daily lives. We all have a desire to be accepted and loved for who we are, not just what we look like on the outside. This book is poignant, profound, and an absolute must read.
Hollis just wants to be a normal girl again. She lost her normal a year ago. She wants to attend university, pursue her dreams, fall in love, but for Hollis, this takes a great deal of personal strength instead of being a regular rite of passage. What should be an exciting time in her life, is filled with uncertainty, self-doubt, and fear. Hollis is an incredible character. Despite her insecurities, she is a brave young woman who is attempting to live her new normal.
Hollis meets two young men in university who end up having a huge impact on her life. One of them is a guy who she never believed could ever be interested in her. The other turns out to be a fantastic friend who is a living daily example of what it means to possess courage and strength. I loved them both. I won’t get into the details of the relationships, it should be read individually to witness them both unfold.
Alison G. Bailey creates characters that are likable, relatable, and extremely well-developed. She creates them in such a way that you care about them, feel as though you know them. Maybe you do know someone like them, maybe you can see a little bit of yourself in them. They are realistic and authentic, displaying characteristics and flaws that are easily found in all of us.
Stop! deals with subject matter that is relevant in today’s society, and it is handled with such a level of grace, dignity, and respect. The story is never forced, it flows flawlessly and effortlessly. Aside from the deep and meaningful message that this book holds, it is also a story of friendship and of love that will undoubtedly make you swoon, make your pulse race a little faster, make your heart ache, and make you laugh out loud. That’s what makes this author’s books so well rounded. She is able to make you feel every emotion that the characters are feeling and bring them to life on the pages. She can make me laugh one minute and then have me crying and smiling in the next – don’t judge me!
This is an unforgettable story that will stay with me for a long time to come.
