Shelley: "You have to read Jamie McGuire, she is such a great author!
Me: "You know that I don't read romance."
Shelley: "But she is such a great author. I know that you would really like her writing."
Me: "Fine...Jamie McGuire writes a book about the zombie apocalypse and I'll read it."
Shelley hands me a copy of Red Hill.
Me reading the back cover: "For Scarlet, raising her two daughters alone blablabla...reports of a widespread, deadly "outbreak" begin to surface..."
Shelley smiling at me.
Me: "Butterfly you!"
Well she got me. So now I have read a zombie apocalypse book written by a romance author...and I liked it! What a fantastic story.
Red Hill is set in Texas during the initial outbreak. It follows several groups of people whose lives are intertwined together. All with one goal...to survive. Jamie McGuire does a fantastic job of bringing these people to life, making them real and relatable.
The story proves that a good zombie book does not need the alpha male / soldier to carry the story. It focuses on the people and what they need to do to save themselves and their loved ones. I would have to put this book right up there with the top zombie books I have read (and I have read quite a few).
I have to give a special mention to the one character who really pulled this story together, Skeeter. This guy brought a whole new level of humanity to the story and at the same time made the Dixon brothers look unable to handle the apocalypse.
