Greg - I’m sure that every aspiring author has that moment when they know that they have something special, something worth publishing. At what point did you realize that Day by Day Armageddon was ready to be sent to a publisher?
J.L. Bourne - Well, to be honest I never thought it was ready for a publisher. It was pretty raw, as I intended. I didn’t fix many of the typos because I wanted the reader to be pulled into the experience of a man on the run from millions of undead. Eventually, I was contacted by publishers interested in DBDA and agreed to a 50,000 copy first print run that has since seen over a dozen follow on editions. DBDA was and remains to this day, imperfect.
Greg - Everyone is afraid of something. Indiana Jones is afraid of snakes, I can’t go on a rollercoaster that goes upside down and backwards at the same time. What scares J.L. Bourne?
J.L. Bourne - What scares me is the thought of waking up one day at age 90 with regrets. Life is way to short. As a guy that recently lost both his parents, I can tell you that I try to live my life without regret. Take chances, fail, succeed, just keep moving.
Greg - What was your inspiration behind Tomorrow War?
J.L. Bourne - My Inspiration for TW was wholly driven by the current socio-economic events of our time. I feel as if we are on the precipice, held together by phony economic numbers and other machinations dreamed up by our elected leaders.
Greg - What is your most memorable Halloween costume?
J.L. Bourne - I was Star Trek’s favourite engineer, Scotty.
Greg - Day by Day Armageddon and Beyond Exile were written in a first person journal
format. For Shattered Hourglass, you switched to a third person perspective. What
made you decide to switch things up?
J.L. Bourne - Because it would be impossible to tell so many threads of a story in the first person. I mean, how many people could possibly be keeping a journal in the apocalypse besides our beloved protagonist, Kil? I had to tell the story from multiple angles, which is why I chose another format for SHATTERED HOURGLASS.
Greg - How old do you think that your daughter should be before you would be comfortable with her reading your books?
J.L. Bourne - With my supervision, I’d be fine with her reading them at age 12 or so. I’d just need to be on hand to walk her through some of the scenes. I don’t write about sex in my books; I’ve never needed to, so I think the vulgar language and the violence are things I’d need to explain to her.
Greg - Is there anything semi-autobiographical about Max?
J.L. Bourne - Well…maybe. There might be a little of myself in there. You decide.
Greg - If you could be a professional sports team’s mascot for a day, which one would you be?
J.L. Bourne - Well, I don’t have cable and I don’t generally watch sports on TV, so I’d pick the coolest most powerful mascot. Maybe a Raptor?
Greg - In the unlikely event of a zombie apocalypse, or the more likely event of an economic or environmental apocalypse, do you have a plan, or will you just wing it?
J.L. Bourne - Oh, I have a plan. Have had one for years. I solidified my plan after the panic of 2008 when Lehman Brothers collapsed and nearly brought the economy down with them. My preparations include good solid comm plans, food & water procurement and storage, and security via superior firepower and off grid surveillance.
Greg - Can you share anything about what readers can expect next from J.L. Bourne? Are there more zombies in the future? Does Max have more adventures? Or will you be taking your reader on a completely new adventure?
J.L. Bourne - Well, my readers have been pretty clear about wanting more DBDA, so I decided to answer that call. Expect DAY BY DAY ARMAGEDDON: GHOST RUN to hit the shelves deep into 2016. GHOST RUN will return to the roots of DBDA and bring my wonderful readers down that dark apocalyptic path of the first person journal. After GHOST RUN? TOMORROW WAR has been a great success; do you think my readers may want to know what’s going on with Max? I’ll be watching those TOMORROW WAR Amazon reviews to find out.
